Ahead of their 10th anniversary, Starboard and Port approached us to help reimagine their visual identity. We offered a new approach for the brand’s primary symbol and a bold toolkit of brand visuals inspired by their nautical name.
The brand’s signature is the “anchorsand,” an ampersand and anchor combo that often adorns equipment, hats, golf shirts, and their annual merch drop for friends and clients.
We were tasked with building a visual identity around the “anchorsand” and were invited to do explorations for the symbol that might give it some polish while preserving its equity for the brand.
In the International Code of Symbols, the nautical flags for the letters S and P are white and blue rectangles nested within each other.
This observation became a foundation for the brand’s direction. We used white and blue rectangles as framing devices on artwork and introduced a new brand pattern inspired by the flags.
Starboard and Port historically only used black and white in their brand. Using the Sierra and Papa nautical flags as inspiration, we introduced blue as the core brand color.
One of the key expressions of S&P’s brand is their annual merch collections. Partners and clients look forward to what they’ll receive in the mail from Chase and George each year. With 10 years in business, they have an archive of stickers, tees, and bandanas featuring amazing artwork from illustrators and designers.
We commissioned a series of illustrations from Mild Side Studio to show how the refreshed visual identity could navigate bold minimalism and detailed expression with ease.
